China / UK Cultural Exchange Programme
Supporting projects emerging from relationships grown from our professional development programmes
Visiting Arts and British Council have supported a number of projects which have emerged out of the professional relationships developed within the China-UK Cultural Exchange Programmes.
The funds available aim to nurture such relationships by providing seed funding for projects which bring together Chinese artists and cultural producers from these programmes with their UK counterparts.
We are pleased to announce two new projects which have recently received support: Out of Place and 100 Words. Previous projects supported by this initiative have included Jin Xing: The Closest - The Furthest (October 2007) and Manchester International Festival's China-UK Symposium (June 2007).

100 Words
100 Words is an ambitious artist development and language learning project that taps into the creativity of young people and creates global connections. It is currently focusing on developing links between China and the UK.
100 Words has been developed by Natasha Betteridge (Creative Director), Rachel Parslew (Creative Producer) and Li Ruru (Associate Director) over the past two years. Last year they went to Shanghai to explore the possibilities of extending the project to the city.

While there, they visited Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre where Rachel re-established contact with Nick Yu. Nick invited the 100 Words team to take part in the 2007 Asia Contemporary Theatre Festival in November, where they ran a two day workshop for writers and actors. Director He Ju and writer Liu Lei from SDAC have just spent a week in the UK and taken part in a three day workshop run in partnership between 100 Words and Theatre503. This was supported by a China-UK Cultural Exchange Award from Visiting Arts and British Council.
As well as being Creative Producer of 100 Words, Rachel worked on all three China-UK Arts Management Placement Programme (as Programme Co-ordinator in 1999 and as Lead Placement Advisor in 2003 and 2005). She was part of the team that led the China In-Country Workshop in Beijing in 2005.
Nick Yu is the Director of Programming & Marketing and a Producer at Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre as well as being a well known playwright and Chief Director of the Asia Contemporary Theatre Festival. He was a participant on the China-UK Arts Management Placement Programme in 2003, attended the China In-Country Workshop in Beijing in 2005 and also attended the China/UK Seminar at Manchester International Festival in 2007. All three were run by Visiting Arts with additional support from British Council.
